Tristan

I’d gotten all of an hour’s worth of sleep last night. Every time I reached over to pull Stella into my arms, the cold unmarred half of the bed made everything from last night wash over me. There’d been times in medical school that I thought that I was drowning in work between school and internship but this drowning was different. Back then, I could still breathe, but after last night? It was as if I would never breathe again.

I pulled myself out of bed and got ready for work, if I didn’t already know that we were down a doctor, I’d call in. Turning the shower on as hot as I could muster, I let the stream hit me. Each bead of water felt like a thousand needles, but I welcomed the sensation, needed it because this pain was better than the pain in my chest. Resting my head against the shower door, I racked my brain to figure out how my life had gotten so fucked up so fast. One letter, in one afternoon, and it blew everything to fucking shreds.

Before I left the house, I walked down the hall to the guest bedrooms and stood outside the one Stella was sleeping in, but the door was closed. Pressing my ear against the solid wood, I strained to hear something, anything, but there was nothing.

“I love you,” I whispered to no one.

I left my house in a daze, barely remembering the drive to work. When I saw how slow the unit was, irritation bloomed in my chest. If it had been hectic, at least my mind wouldn’t have been able to wander to Stella and the clusterfuck that was going on in our world. But with nothing exciting going on, it gave me time to think about it all, to read and re-read the letter from Tander Genetics. Waiting until their offices opened was enough to have me pacing, but they were on Pacific time, so I had no choice.

At ten o’clock, I made the call.

“Thank you for calling Tander Genetics. Please listen carefully, as our menu options may have changed . . .”

Oh, god, I hated this, whatever happened to good old customer service?

“Say or press one if this is a hospital . . .” I listened as the automated voice went through each number. “Say or press four if you have received a letter from Tander Genetics and have questions—”

“Four.”

“I’m sorry, I did not understand your reply. Say or press seven if you’d like to hear these options again or press zero at anytime for an operator.”

What the hell? Why didn’t they just tell me that option to begin with? I pressed zero.

“Thank you for calling Tander Genetics. Please listen carefully, as our menu options may have changed . . .”

Really? Was I on some show called Let’s Fuck with Tristan’s life? Ignoring all the options, I pressed four instead of trying to say it and hoped for the best. If not, next time, I’d just start hitting numbers.
